How is the result:
$ cu -l /dev/modem
(You need uucp installed.)
If you get the message 'Connected.',
Type 'AT'.
To terminate cu, type '~' and then '.'(period).
See man cu.

$ chmod +w /var/lock/LCK..modem
$ rm /var/lock/LCK..modem
